For almost close to a decade,the club football scene in South Africa has been ruled and run by Pretoria giants Mamelodi Sundowns,winning almost half the titles in the 2nd and 3rd decade of the new century.
Every season until the recently just ended one,the script has been the same with the team from Tshwane wrapping up the title race with games to go to the end of the season, and that’s how dominant and rampant they have been over the last seasons.
Every football fanatic who wants a change of guard on the winners podium would agree that a change in hands of who gets the title is not good for competition internally,externally but also brings about more interest into the league be it interms of followership as well as investment.
And the just ended season has Mamelodi Sundowns been pushed to the very limit leading to them relinquishing their title which they had religiously made their own for the past 8seasons.
The 2025/2026 PSL campaign is now done, dusted and has ended with new champions being crowned ,as Orlando Pirates ended their decade long wait for the league title.
And in some fashion they achieved that winning a domestic treble with the league ,Mtn 8 and Carling Black label knockout cup.
Going into next season, football fanatics wonder and have to brace up for what the competition will be like as the Tshwane giants would want to get back what’s theirs which is good for the league and South African football.
A rivalry is certainly born and heightened with how things unfolded in the just ended season as next season awaits.
